Hello parents!
We are off to a great start. Students came in, got to work, turned in reading logs and were showing great responsibility! Let's keep up the great work!
We began our day with our daily comprehension and math workbooks. (Two short problems that get our mind in gear). Next we had a short writing prompt. I asked students to write to the best of their ability so I have a baseline of where we are starting and so I know what areas to work on with each student. The topic was, "If you walked into school and ANYBODY in the world was your teacher for a day, who would it be? Tell a story about the day that person was your teacher." I can't wait to read them all!
After that we began our first math lesson. It was all about making groups of equal numbers to show repeated addition and how that relates to multiplication. All students did a great job with our manipulatives and continued to do well on the problem set. Please make sure that you saw the problem set come home with the homework. As we continue with the modules, you will notice that the problem set very closely mirrors the homework and it is very helpful to you, parents, to see how we were thinking through the problems and writing them out. Please use the problem set as your guide. Also, don't forget to look on the engage NY website for additional support.
We were able to go outside for recess, which was a nice break. Then it was onto reading and gluing in the sample for the Wednesday reading log. This includes a summary AND two cause and effect sentences created from events in the story.
We also worked onour first Social Studies Unit! Students glued in a map of North America and labeled the countries. Then we read a little about where Mexico is located. Tomorrow we will add some notes. Our first unit about Mexico will be very exciting as we learn about it's geography, government, economy and culture!
Tomorrow we will begin a 2 day math assessment which assesses second grade math skills. This allows us to see what skills from second grade transfered over, and which skills we need to revisit.
Until next time.....
